The Writ and Writings of Kris Farmen

Latest

Big news is on the horizon, along with big changes to this site. After a long absence from both my website and the Twittersphere, I’m jumping back into the water, metaphorically speaking.

First, the big news. This summer I inked a contract with VPD to publish my new novel, Blue Ticket. Starting in Alaska in 1948, it’s the story of a guy leaving Alaska to go to art school in Paris. Suffice it to say he has a very difficult time getting out of Alaska, and winds up on the run across northern Canada, being chased by gangsters, the FBI, and the Mounties. I’ve been describing it to curious friends and colleagues as sort of the literary equivalent of an action-adventure flick. Think Romancing the Stone or Raiders of the Lost Ark, but with much more of an art house sensibility. Ultimately, it’s a story about being an artist and holding true to that calling, come hell or high water.

Now on to the big changes. I’ve finally decided to start using this site as more of an active tool for readers to access my work. Despite the fact that I’m still trying to get used to the idea that it’s no longer the twentieth century, I’ll be turning this site into more of a traditional blog. I’ll also be updating it with new material on more than a semi-annual basis. Exactly what kind of material I post is still under consideration, but it will likely be stuff about surfing here in Alaska and life at my off-the-grid surf shack with no running water or electricity, plus book reviews and thoughts on writing. Maybe even a few guest bloggers too. There’s other things I’m thinking about, but one thing you can be sure of, gentle reader, is that it will never be dull.

In other words, hold onto your hats.

Big news! Surfing novella!

I’m very pleased to announce that my surfing novella Edge of Somewhere will be released in June in the book Weathered Edge. It’s about a surfer who gets savaged by a shark, and how the attack affects his life in the following years. More substantially, it’s a story about Alaska and Alaskans that isn’t set in Alaska, a notion I’ve been in love with for some time. The main characters, Charlie Deacon and Amy Glanton, are both Alaskan surfers living in Australia. There’s sun, sand, love, and of course, surfing. I’m more than a little stoked for this release.

I’d also be remiss not to mention the fact that when you purchase Weathered Edge, you also get two other awesome Alaska-themed novellas:  Weathered In and Sundowning, by Martha Amore and Buffy McKay, respectively. This being the digital age, it will be available in both paper and electronic format.

More information coming soon.  Stay tuned.

And fair warning:  The shark attack is on the first page.  Enter the water at your own risk…

Out in the Cold Fundraiser!

Old School LongboardBig news and big doings afoot for December… I’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for travel and research for a non-fiction book about surfing in Alaska. The idea is actually pretty straightforward: I’ll be spending the summer of 2013 travelling around Alaska, looking for surf. Right now the working title is Out in the Cold: Dispatches from an Alaskan Surf Safari.  Please check it out, and if you feel moved to do so, contribute what you can.  And if you would, pass the link on to family and friends.

I’m quite keen to see where this campaign goes. With all the upheavals happening in the publishing business these days, it’s getting harder and harder to get the funding for non-fiction projects. Crowd sourcing sites like Kickstarter have the potential to give writers a way to circumvent, and indeed to subvert, the current old-school publishing paradigm. I have to say, I’m really stoked to be involved with this movement!

Turn Again by Kris Farmen is out!

Big news:  Kris Farmen’s new novel, Turn Again, is out in the world!  Published by VP&D, it is currently available in print and electronic editions.  Here’s the back cover copy:

“I was told you were a magic man.”

In October of 1894, the anthropologist Rebecca Ashford arrives in Kodiak, Alaska to interview a Russian prisoner with an American name and an Athabascan Indian past.  Aleksandr Campbell has been sentenced to hang for a double murder, killings that took place in his homeland far to the north on the Kenai Peninsula—a little-known part of the territory where Russian is the common language and the handful of resident Americans are foreigners in a strange land.  His tale, recorded in her notes as he waits for the gallows, spans years and miles of wilderness and clashing cultures.  It is a story of young love and of old magic that is rapidly draining out of the country with the coming of the gold rush.  It is a story of being Alaskan at a time when Alaska barely existed.

“Kris Farmen’s Turn Again is a spellbinding masterpiece. A powerful epic with unforgettable characters, rich Alaskan history and culture, and an authentic glimpse at a time when humanity was forsaken in the name of progress. Farmen has crafted a haunting tale of mythical transformation and lost love. There is much to be learned from this modern parable.”

—Don Rearden, author of the critically acclaimed novel, The Raven’s Gift
